A local company has put up the prize money to help draw world-class athletes for the 9th annual Paddle For A Cause.
The Dean Randazzo Cancer Foundation will award $5,000 in prize money Saturday, June 11 thanks to its presenting sponsor J&L Amish Depot in Columbus, New Jersey.
The World Paddle Association sanctioned event is a 22.5-mile paddleboard race around the Absecon Island. J&L Amish Depot will provide the prize money: $1,000 for first, $500 for second and $250 for third place in the Men’s and Women’s 14’ Stand up Paddle, and Unlimited prone paddle divisions.
“We think the Dean Randazzo Cancer Foundation is working hard to help people with cancer in the community and we support that,” said Jake King, of Lancaster, Pa. “They’re doing a good job and we’re glad to be a part of it.”
“Thanks to J&L Amish Depot, this is going to be our best Paddle For A Cause to date,” said President Mark Zappone of Linwood.
With Teal cruises of Margate on board the event, social paddlers will take a 4-mile course to the Wonder Bar in Atlantic City and will then be escorted back to the after party at Golden Nugget.
More than 100 stand-up and prone paddleboarders are expected to participate in three events beginning and ending at Frank S. Farley State Marina. All paddlers are required to fundraise $200 to participate with proceeds benefiting the foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides grants to financially assist people with cancer.
The afterparty and awards ceremony is 4 p.m. at The Deck at Golden Nugget. The party is included with registration and $25 to all others.
Residents with homes along paddle course Atlantic City, Ventnor, Margate and Longport are encouraged to show support the paddlers as they pass.
